This Read Me document provides late-breaking news about Macintosh System Software 6.0.7. Some of this information is not contained in the Macintosh Reference.
BEFORE YOU INSTALL YOUR SYSTEM SOFTWARE
*** Important ***
Be sure to remove any virus detection or security programs from your System Folder before using the Installer. (After you have finished installing version 6.0.7, you may reinstall these programs.) ***
Before using the Installer, make sure you have one of the following sets of disks:
• 1.4 MB disks (supplied with new Macintosh computers):
1. Macintosh System Startup
2. Macintosh System Additions
• 800K disks (supplied with the system software upgrade kit):
1. Macintosh System Tools
2. Macintosh Printing Tools
3. Macintosh Utilities Disk 1
4. Macintosh Utilities Disk 2
Complete instructions for installing the system software are provided in Chapter 2 of the Macintosh Reference.
The 1.4 MB System Startup disk or 800K System Tools disk does not contain all of the files, fonts, and desk accessories you may want to install. You may need to use files on one or several of the other disks in your set of Macintosh system software disks.
IF YOU USE A LASERWRITER PRINTER
• All LaserWriters except Personal LaserWriter SC and LaserWriter IISC: The 1.4 MB System Additions disk or the 800K Printing Tools disk for version 6.0.7 contains two different LaserWriter drivers, named LaserWriter 5.2 and LaserWriter 6.0.2 (version 6.0.2 is located in the Apple Color folder). LaserWriter 5.2 is considered the standard LaserWriter driver. LaserWriter 6.0.2 is specifically designed to work with color PostScript printers and to provide halftone printing of color images on monochrome PostScript printers such as Apple LaserWriter printers. (For more information about LaserWriter 6.0.2, refer to the Read Me file in the Apple Color folder on the same disk with the LaserWriter drivers.)
-- Installing system software on a new Macintosh:
When you install version 6.0.7 of system software on a new Macintosh, the Installer automatically installs LaserWriter 5.2, the standard driver.
-- Upgrading to version 6.0.7 of Macintosh system software:
When you use the Installer to upgrade your system software to version 6.0.7, the Installer determines which version of the LaserWriter driver is already installed. If you are using LaserWriter 5.2 or an earlier version of the driver, the Installer automatically installs LaserWriter 5.2. If you are using LaserWriter 6.0 or LaserWriter 6.0.1 (the previous releases for color or halftone printing), the Installer automatically installs LaserWriter 6.0.2.
-- Preparing to print color or halftone images
If you currently use LaserWriter 5.2 and you want to print on a color PostScript printer or to produce halftone versions of color images on a monochrome LaserWriter, remove the files LaserWriter 5.2 and Laser Prep from the System Folder of your startup disk, then drag the files LaserWriter 6.0.2 and Laser Prep 6.0.1 from the Apple Color folder on the Printing Tools disk or
the System Additions disk to your System Folder.
*** Important ***
If your Macintosh is on a network and shares the use of a printer and you install LaserWriter 6.0.2 and Laser Prep 6.0.1, make sure that everyone on the network installs LaserWriter 6.0.2 and Laser Prep 6.0.1. If some people use LaserWriter 6.0.2 and others use LaserWriter 5.2, the shared printers will reinitialize frequently. TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM, MAKE SURE ALL THE MACINTOSH
COMPUTERS ON THE NETWORK USE THE SAME VERSION OF THE PRINTER DRIVER. ***
• Personal LaserWriter SC and LaserWriter IISC:
The Personal LaserWriter SC driver replaces the earlier LaserWriter IISC driver. If you upgrade your system software to version 6.0.7, the LaserWriter IISC driver will be replaced automatically by the Personal LaserWriter SC. Printing is not affected by this change.
IF YOUR MACINTOSH IS ON A NETWORK
• The Chooser:
Be sure to close the Chooser when you are finished using it. When its window is open, the Chooser generates significant activity on the network.
• EtherTalk card:
If you are using an Apple EtherTalk card in the Macintosh IIci or the Macintosh IIfx, be sure to use the Apple Network Products Installer disk to install or reinstall the EtherTalk software. Instructions for using this Installer are in the Network Products Installer booklet provided with the computer.
• Using a shared printer:
Make certain that your Macintosh uses the same version of the LaserWriter driver as all other computers on the network. (If you need to install LaserWriter 6.0.2, follow the instructions in "Preparing to Print Color or Halftone Images," above.)
IF YOU HAVE A MACINTOSH IIsi OR MACINTOSH LC
The Macintosh IIsi and the Macintosh LC do not have a built-in floating-point unit (a coprocessor that improves performance during intensive mathematical calculations). Some application programs require a floating-point unit. If you try to use one of these programs with a Macintosh IIsi or a Macintosh LC, you will see the message "Coprocessor not installed" or, when you’re
using MultiFinder, "The application has unexpectedly quit."
You may add a floating-point unit to the Macintosh IIsi by installing a NuBus adapter card or an 030 Direct Slot adapter card. The Macintosh LC cannot be upgraded to include a floating-point unit.
IF YOU HAVE A MACINTOSH PLUS OR A MACINTOSH SE
When printing shadow, outline, or boldface text in large point sizes on the LaserWriter IISC, ImageWriter LQ, or AppleFax Modem, some characters may not print. The problem varies depending upon the application program, font, font style, and font size used. You can avoid this problem by using plain text.
IF YOU HAVE A MACINTOSH PORTABLE
System software version 6.0.7 has corrected problems on the Macintosh Portable that prevented the internal modem from being recognized and that reported errors incorrectly when reading 800K disks.
IF YOU USE HYPERCARD
You must use HyperCard 2.0 with System Software 6.0.7. HyperCard 1.2.5 or any earlier version is not compatible with System Software 6.0.7.
